50 Countries in 50 Days

We left New York in January 2012 with the goal of taking a year-long honeymoon and checking off all the things on our bucket list. The Great Wall of China, Rio’s Carnaval, the Northern Lights, Victoria Falls, the Serengeti Wildebeest Migration, Machu Picchu…all these sights were as incredible as we imagined, but what we didn’t expect? The people across the globe would inspire us just as much. People helped us when we got in a bind, invited us into their homes, and genuinely wanted to share a piece of their country and their hearts. The countless individuals that have touched our lives —from those we’ve met on the road to the friends following online— are a main reason we are still nomadic after 1,762 days.

To celebrate our 50th country together, each nation, and its incredible people, we decided to post a photo every day for 50 days. One picture could never capture the magic of a country, but we tried to share a variety of landscapes, cultural scenes, and unforgettable moments. If you want to comment on any photo, just click it to continue the conversation on Facebook. We always love to hear from you!

  1. Your photos are absolutely stunning. It is also just wonderful that you are living the nomadic lifestyle. It is no secret, this is the life I long for. My husband is a dad (I’m a stepmom) so that has grounded us until his youngest turns 18. I was on the road about a half the year for my job, but I want my travel to be for pleasure going forward (with a little business mixed in from time to time). Seven more years ;). In the meantime we will enjoy our vacations throughout the year, but you have certainly given us both something to very much look forward to.

    1. Heather, we’re happy to hear you have the travel bug with plans to pursue those dreams–don’t let them escape you! And just putting it out there, it’s possible to travel for a year with kids and a little world schooling : )

Dear Mike and Anne wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving and enjoying your blog/website!
You are so inspiring and you give others the courage to dream those dreams and start fulfilling
    them!
We have traveled to about 65 countries and I have often thought what shall I do with my
incredible experiences. Seeing your photos makes me think I should put together my own
book of journeys along with the photos. So thank you for the energy around that!
    Blessings and smiles~ Nancy

    1. You should absolutely put a book together! It’s so nice to have all those incredible memories in one place…and we’d love to see it 🙂

  3. Cindy Gordon says:

I love these photos, they are beautiful. I have to say that I really love the rainbow in the picture from Zambia. They are simply amazing!

    1. Victoria Falls is rainbow mania! A visit to Zambia is unforgettable, especially when you combine Livingstone with safari in South Luangwa. Hope you go, Cindy!

  4. Wow, congratulations on your incredible adventures! Your photos are inspiring, especially the Kenya and Chile shots. 😉 Travel does teach us so many wonderful things, and it’s lovely to see who you’re enjoying your travels together so much. Do plan to visit us in Canada in 2017 – we’re having a big 150th party!

I haven’t been to any of these locations. I’ve only heard of about half of them. I must be living in a closet, right?!? I see so many beautiful places that must go on my travel bucket list.

    1. So many incredible countries get so few visitors…the good news being they are often untainted by tourism and offer the most culturally rich experiences. Hope you consider some these far-flung places for your next trip!

    1. Thanks so much, Carla! It’s amazing that even at 50 countries that’s only a fraction of the world! Gotta keep exploring!

    1. Half century, I like it. Imagine how many places we can explore in 50 years!

  16. Amazing! You have such a variety of countries there, most of which I would love to visit! Northern Ireland and Ireland are on my “to visit soon” list as I live right next to them in Scotland. And I absolutely loved Portugal when I was there! You should definitely visit Scandinavia as well, I think you will like it 🙂

    1. Gotta keep exploring…so many countries and beautiful cultures to experience. We definitely need to spend more time in Scandinavia and you should definitely get to Ireland and Northern Island. We included them both as one road trip in our Nat Geo Book, Ultimate Journeys for Two 🙂

  17. Terry Drake says:

I’ve been following you for some time now and it just keeps getting better. I travel the USA with my tiny family and tiny home and always look to you guys for inspiration!

    1. OMG, that means so much to us Terry. Seriously, that made our day (just read your comment to Anne across the table in our camper). So glad to have you along for the ride!

  18. Congratulations on 50 countries guys, that’s so impressive. Photos are excellent and love the way you tell stories about the places you visit!

    1. Thanks so much Gezilecek! Yeah 50 countries was a big milestone…but we don’t really care too much how many places we visit, we just want to do them justice when we share them with the HoneyTrek family!
