Young Lesotho boy tending to a horse

Since we only spent a few days in The Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho we weren’t planning on writing a “You Know You Are In….” However, when one of HoneyTrek’s most astute and active fans, Rashaad Jorden, asked us if we had planned such an article….well, how could we say no? Besides, Lesotho is such a fascinating place and unique in so many ways that it deserves a little more love!

Everyone wears a blanket in Lesotho

You know you’re in Lesotho when…

…Everyone is wearing a blanket, cause damn, it’s cold up there.

How do you get around Lesotho

…There are 20 people commuting by horse or pony for every one person by car.
…Most beer is brewed in a mud hut and is a closer cousin to sour milk than Coors….but hey, still not bad!

Land so desolate even the British wouldn't try to colonize it.

…The 4×4 mini-van buses conquer snow and boulder encrusted mountain passes that would give most Jeep enthusiasts second thoughts.

A car battery, a loose solar panel, and some used telephone wire can become a cellular phone charging station.

…Even at the lowest elevation point of the entire country (4,593 ft), you can still get a nose bleed.
…Hotels are very generous with their blankets, mostly due to the fact that they have no heat.

    Thanks for the shout out!

So, Lesotho was never colonized? I thought since it’s an English speaking country (I think) it would have been colonized by the British…

Also, what is the currency there?

  2. Matlalane says:

The currency used in Lesotho is Maloti and Rands

  3. Phoka Albert says:

We use Loti as our currency here in Lesotho. It is equivalent to South African rand.

  4. That’s my home,glad you enjoyed your visit ?

Apologies I noticed when the post was already posted that I mispelt Jorden’s name, this autocorrect business messes us up sometimes

Hi, I’m Anna from Lesotho. ☺️ Thank you for visiting my country.
Lesotho was not colonised by Britain, but it was a British protectorate (including Botswana and Swaziland/Eswatini). This is what helped Lesotho from becoming part of South Africa (and not be under the apartheid rule). English and Sesotho are the official languages.

    1. WOW, thank you so much for the kind and educational comment Anna. Some other people were complaining about the British comment, so I removed it. But you are right, it was never colonized, as we said. Just under the protectorate.

  7. Dominating language is Sesotho then comes English. Maluti is the currency which is at par with South African Rand

  8. Li Matsoso says:

Isn’t it proper to know the history of a country before you make such statements? You really don’t know Lesotho Was colonised by Britain?

    1. You are right Li. That comment was misinformed, and a bit insensitive as well. Just removed that section of the blog. Thanks for your insights and helping us be better and more sensitive, we are all learning together!

Aww, I love this and it is very spot on. The one about hotels and heat is so funny, yet true. Would love to meet you when I relocate back home to Lesotho. I bring some, “You know you are in America stories when…”
