Our trip planning is a work in progress. We’d love your recommendations on towns, excursions, restaurants, lodging, or anything you think would be helpful during our stay in the Maldives.

  1. Hi!
I just found your via almostfearless (congratulations!). Not sure if you still have room in your itinerary, but my husband and I visited the Maldives on our RTW honeymoon and found two relatively affordable options (considering that rooms at resorts 700+ a night!).
1 – Stay at one of the hotels on Male (about 100 USD/night) and take day trips to the fancy resorts. For 85/person (40 of which worked as a food/drink credit) we were able to use all the amenities at the Taj Exotica resort – which runs around 1000/night. A shuttle boat brought us to/from Male.
2- A dhoni cruise via GAdventures is another good value for the Maldives. We were on a dhoni with 6 other travellers, had a chef, crew, and guide to lead us to snorkeling spots throughout the atolls. Nothing better than docking at a sandbank for the night with nothing but ocean all around!
Oh! and don’t exchange USD to Rufiyaa – the currency is of no value elsewhere and local business early welcome US currency.

    1. Carmela, so glad you came over and left such a thoughtful comment. great to meet you. yeah we TOTALLY wanted to add the Maldives into our RTW, but it just wasnt worth the two flights and ridiculous prices for rooms….but your tips are great to keep it on the cheaper side…..when we do go, we will keep them top of mind. that is so cool you guys did an RTW honeymoon as well…did you keep a blog? URL?

      1. Thanks for the reply Mike!

I’ve been reading through your blog and found a bunch of cool coincidences. We were in Rio at the same time for Carnaval, are both from NYC (we made a million trips to the REI in Soho before we left on our rtw) and we used the same font as your HoneyTrek logo on our destination wedding invitation.

We did start a blog but once we hit Easter Island, the slow/lack of Internet made it hard to keep it up. Trying to finish up the last couple legs of our trip buy sadly are back to work/falling in love with NYC again.

        Our blog is http://www.nowrongturns.com
